Bedford - Postcard History Book
By Alethea A. Yates
Paperback, Text and Photographs, 127 Pages
Before the post–World War II construction boom, Bedford, Massachusetts, was considered little more than a sleepy farming community, yet it was host to a series of remarkable institutions. In the late 1800s, the Bedford Springs resort on Fawn Lake was a summertime haven for wealthy Bostonians. From 1902 to 1918, large crowds traveled by streetcar to Lexington Park in Bedford to enjoy its zoo, restaurant, and rustic outdoor theater. In 1900, Bedford’s reputation as a rural “temperance town” attracted a hospital for the treatment of alcoholism. Ten years later, the Willard Hospital was succeeded by Llewsac Lodge, a rest home and country retreat for women from the city. Proximity to Boston and the needs of both military and civil aviation led to the construction of the Laurence G. Hanscom Airport in 1941. Today, Bedford is an integral part of the Boston area’s high-technology industry while still retaining a small-town character that its residents cherish.
Whether you are a current or former Bedford resident, this book will take you on a pleasant journey down Memory Lane!

A Revolutionary Town
By Louise K. Brown
From the Bedford Historical Society
Hardcover with jacket; Text, photos and illustrations; 336 pages
"...the exciting, warmly human story of Bedford's role in the War of Independence."
This is the story of Bedford, Massachusetts, from the year of its founding, 1729, to its reconstruction in the aftermath of the American Revolution. It describes in intimate detail the people and events which made this town a microcosm of New England colonial society. It tells the story of the early settlers and their way of life in the wilderness, of their servility to the land, and of the earliest houses they built and fortified against the hostile forces of man and nature. The roots of the American Revolution are traced to these Puritan settlers who developed in their town polity a new lifestyle of independence and self-sufficiency.
The book, authored by Bedford's late town historian Louise K. Brown, was published in 1975 at the time of America's Bicentennial. By purchasing this book, you provide support to the Bedford Historical Society. (The shipping weight of this hardcover publication is 1 pound, 10 ounces.)
